CPS identify victims in Forest Lawn and Highland Park homicides

Calgary police have now identified the last homicide victims in Calgary, raising the count up to 22 for the year.

Early Wednesday morning, a man’s body was found on a road in Forest Lawn, which has now been identified as 34-year-old Jonathan Joe Schmeikal of Calgary, but the cause of death is being withheld at this time.

Neighbours had reported hearing gunshots in the area to media, but police have said they haven’t gotten any official reports of shots being fired.

They also say although there’s nothing to indicate this was a random incident, a motive hasn’t been determind and there’s no persons of interest in custody.

Meanwhile, police say the man stabbed to death in Highland Park on Wednesday is 56-year-old Frank Burton, also of Calgary.

Around 9:00 a.m., police were called to a home in the 4200 block of Centre St. N.W. where Burton was found and eventually died in hospital.

Like the Forest Lawn case, a specific motive is yet to be determined and police say they don’t think it was random.

Police confirm Burton had a history of mental illness, putting himself in vulnerable positions and investigators believe this could be a motive in the attack.

Neighbours in the area are being asked to search their yards for any weapons or suspicious clothing and the description of a suspect has been released.

Investigators say he has darker skin, a stocky build and is approximately 5’10” tall and was wearing a grey hooide at the time of the offence.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police immediately.
