The historic Bow Valley Ranche in beautiful Fish Creek Park was the setting Tuesday for our province’s 110th birthday bash.
Dubbed the ‘1st Annual Alberta’s Birthday Celebration Extravaganza,’ the star of the day was a massive birthday cake designed by the Fairmont Palliser to replicate the cake made for Senator Patrick Burns’ 75th birthday back in 1932.
Food writer Dan Clapson tells 660 News, ‘it’s a very tall cake, about seven feet tall…and had huge layers…obviously a cake like that is part ornamental so the whole thing is not edible…there was about 300 pounds of vanilla icing put on display and the top part of each layer had edible cake on it to be sliced up and served.’
Senator Burns, one of ‘The Big Four ‘ is credited as being one of the founders of the Calgary Stampede.
Activities included a re-enactment of the September 1st, 1905 inauguration event, the date Alberta officially became a province.
