Alberta Party leader says NDP distracted by federal campaign, needs to get back to work in Edmonton

The leader of the Alberta Party says the NDP government needs to stop campaigning for its federal counterparts and get back to work in the Alberta Legislature.

Greg Clark says with layoffs piling up and the largest deficit in provincial history forecast this year, the government needs to recall the legislature and bring down a budget as soon as possible, not after the federal election as it has planned.

Clark says many NDP staff members aren’t even working for the province right now.

“Some of their political staff are taking leaves of absences of weeks, in some cases over a month, to campaign for federal NDP candidates including in the federal byelection here in Calgary Foothills,” said Clark. “You don’t take a leave of absence after being on the job for three months, that’s not appropriate.”

Clark says the NDP has also quietly dumped a public sector hiring and wage freeze put in place by the former PC government.

He says in these tough economic times, they should immediately re-implement it.
