Police highlight need to be well-rested behind the wheel, after close call at the Calf Robe

Calgary Police are highlighting the need to be well-rested behind the wheel after a car rolled off the Calf Robe Bridge Saturday morning.

Shortly before 2:30 police, fire and EMS responded to a single vehicle rollover on southbound Deerfoot at the Calf Robe bridge.

The Reconstruction Team determined the man in his 30’s was falling asleep behind the wheel, when he lost control and hit a guard rail, flipping his vehicle.

The car rolled down the hill, but luckily didn’t land in the water.

Officials pulled the 35-year-old from the vehicle, and took him to hospital in serious, non-life threatening condition.

Acting Sgt. David Fakas said the outcome could’ve been much worse.

“If you’re tired enough that you’re falling asleep at the wheel, you should either pull over or delay your trip until you’re more rested. Falling asleep at the wheel can be fatal and it has happened in the past so just be aware of you’re condition and take steps to be more alert when you’re driving,” Fakas said.

Fakas added the man is expected to survive.
