CPS investigating Calgary’s 18th homicide

Calgary Police are investigating a fatal shooting that happened in the northwest community of Arbour Lake, Thursday evening.

Paramedics were called to the 600 block of Arbour Lake Drive, shortly after 5:30 p.m. to find a man’s body laying in the middle of the road.

Calgary police were called to reports of gunfire, and confirm Hui Xu, 42, was shot and killed. Xu may also be known as Phillip Tu.

Inspector Ryan Ayliffe said police do not believe the attack was random. “We do have witnesses, a lot,” he said, “I’m not familiar with the scene, but there are witnesses and they are cooperating with the investigation.”

The homicide unit has taken over the case. It is the 18th murder in Calgary, this year, and the third in five days.

Another man, apparently Xu’s son, could be seen holding the body in the middle of the street.

A nurse who lives nearby rushed down the street, with her husband, to offer help. “He was holding [Xu] and stifling the bloody hair and holding his head. I couldn’t get a pulse on him,” she said, “[the young man] said ‘well, he’s still breathing,’ and more for his sake than anything I started CPR, I started compressions.”

She went on to say there were a number of people around trying to help, and that Xu likely died before emergency crews arrived. “Really sorry for the young man, watching his dad getting killed and watching him, having him die in his arms. I, you know, tried to help out more for his sake than anything,” she said.

Neighbours said shell casings, keys and a broken phone scattered Arbour Lake Drive, and a blood stain, more than a meter long, was very clear.

“You know, to see a body on the street, in the middle of the street, is very sad to see. You think about the family, but also for the neighbourhood to have this type of violence just invade a peaceful community, a family community,” one neighbour said. Others nearby admitted more than a few houses on the block had been centers for drug activity in the past.

Investigators believe the shooting was a targeted attack, and have suggested there do not appear to be any links to Saturday’s shooting in Monterey Park. David Quach, 27, was shot and killed in the driveway of a California Blvd NE home.

Calgary Police are scheduled to update media at an afternoon press conference.
