Bob Hartley helped the Calgary Flames stun the NHL to make the playoffs, and was rewarded with the Jack Adams Award as coach of the year on Wednesday.

Hartley was a runaway winner for his first Jack Adams, finishing ahead of the New York Rangers’ Alain Vigneault and Nashville Predators’ Peter Laviolette.

In his acceptance speech, Hartley thanked his previous teams, the Colorado Avalanche and Atlanta Thrashers.

“The Calgary Flames ownership group, Ken King, Brian Burke, Brad Treliving, my coaching partners, my support staff, our players, what an unbelievalbe bunch, our fans, the C of Red, thanks for an unbelievable support,” he said.

Hartley later said he has changed as a coach with experience since his time with Colorado and Atlanta and credited his players for the award.

“Apart from my wife I don’t think there’s anyone who comes to the Saddledome to watch me,” Hartley said.

Flames forward Jiri Hudler also won the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability.

Rookie Johnny Gaudreau came in third for the Calder, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie.
