As flood anniversary approaches, one group calling for action

As we near the two year anniversary of the devastating floods in southern Alberta, one group is trying to keep flood mitigation top of mind.

Brenda Leeds-Binder with the Calgary River Communities Action Group (CRCAG), tells 660news they are hopeful the NDP government can keep the work started by previous government going.

“We really don’t want people to forget what happened,” she said. “The government has really gained some good momentum, in flood mitigation measures in the Elbow and Bow Rivers and certainly don’t want lose that momentum”.

Leeds-Binder says the Springbank off stream reservoir on the Elbow River is one of the projects they want the NDP to complete as flooding in Calgary impacts the entire province’s economy.

“The downtown core is in a flood plain and it’s at risk. When the city’s economy is at risk, which of course impacts the economy of this entire province, that’s a big issue and we’d like it to be one of the first issues they tackle”.
