Hit and run vehicle was stolen from Airdrie; used in other gas and dashes

Calgary police say the vehicle used in Sunday’s violent hit and run in the northwest following a gas and dash was stolen in Airdrie last week and used in two other gas thefts.

On Friday, a stolen 2006 Ford Super Duty pick-up truck with Alberta license plate EUX378, pulled up to a gas station on Bowfort Road N.W. and the passenger of the Ford filled up the vehicle, but left without paying.

Police say there was a similar crime in Cochrane.

Then came the incident on Sunday when the same happened at a Centrex station at 1840 16th Avenue N.W., except after the fill-up and the driver pulling into a nearby parking lot, a 35-year-old station employee confronted the two in the Ford.

The truck hit her, carrying her on the hood for about 15 metres before she was run over and she remains in serious condition.

Units throughout Calgary are looking for the culprits and Insp. Ken Thrower said he’s never seen anything like this in his nearly 40 years of policing.

“When we finally heard the call, what exactly happened out there, you’re just thinking really, that really happened?” he said.” It’s devastating.”

Thrower called the women’s actions heroic, but they don’t recommend members of the public take the law into their own hands.

“Maybe her acts would’ve prevented, maybe these guys are spinning off and maybe there’s a kid walking across the street or there’s other people there if it’s in that mall and that parking lot,” he said. “We don’t want anyone else to put themselves in that dangerous position.”

The two suspects are described as Caucasian males, 20 to 25 years old, with slim builds.

The driver has brown hair and the passenger has blond hair and was wearing a cowboy hat during the incident on June 5.

Thrower said it’s possible the driver in Sunday’s incident may face a charge of attempted homicide.

The crime has also reignited calls for legislation requiring customers to pay at the pump before paying and Thrower said like in 2011 under then-police chief Rick Hanson, the CPS supports the move.

“This is an example of why that initiative was put in to hopefully prevent this,” Thrower said. “We are definitely going to review this, we’ll look at this, it was conversation yesterday in Calgary police about that, so we’re definitely going to look at that.”

Police are currently reviewing CCTV footage and speaking to witnesses, but anyone else with information is asked to contact police immediately.
