Paramedics preaching window safety for young kids

It’s an often overlooked danger.

EMS are warning parents of young children to exercise caution around open windows.

Every year when the weather gets warm, paramedics respond to emergencies where children have been seriously injured by a fall.

Kids aged one to four are at the most risk.

Spokesperson Stuart Brideaux says the number one thing you can do is eliminate access.

“That would include moving things out from underneath a window that a child might be able to climb on, a bed, furniture, stools, dressers or things like that, that a child may be able to access the window from,” he said.

You can also purchase a safety device to install on a window that will stop the window from opening greater than four inches or 10 centimetres.
