City Council to look at fast-tracking directly to LRT for Green Line

City council has voted for a study on the LRT Green Line that would look at the possibility of skipping buses and going straight to trains.

Ward 12 Councillor Shane Keating suggested with federal and provincial money coming in that the City begin right away with building the LRT system instead of the pre-planned bus system first.

But then Ward 7 Councillor Druh Farrell suggested a cost-benefit analysis on what that move would be like, which was approved.

Mayor Naheed Nenshi said Keating made a good suggestion, but changing course was not very surprising.

“We are many years from breaking ground on rail with the Green Line, whether or not money falls from the sky, so I’m happy to do the study,” he said, adding however there are numerous reasons for the bus option, including money, time saving and attracting enough riders to bring down operating costs.

Nenshi added it’s clear better transit is needed in the southeast, as well as the north-central line and the question is how best to pay for it.
