Fire ban for Foothills after Tuesday blaze

The MD of Foothills has put a fire ban in place after a large grass fire spawned an emergency alert late Tuesday afternoon.

The fire near Blackie was whipped out of control by winds gusting as high as 90 kilometres an hour.

Foothills Fire Chief Jim Smith said it’s just too dry to allow any fires.

“No open burning, no open fires, no burn barrels, no warming fires or cooking fires, the only fires that are allowed are industrial flare stack type fires,” he said.

Smith said his crews are back on scene after Tuesday’s blaze putting out any hot spots Wednesday afternoon.

This is the only ban currently in place in the province.

However a number of areas including the Calgary Wildfire Management Area, which covers an area west of the city from Waterton Lakes Park in the south to the Red Deer River in the north, have fire advisories out.
