Teen charged in group machete attack in Calgary’s N.E.

Police have charged a 17-year-old after a man was attacked by a group of young people the northeast community of Coventry Hills on Friday, February 13th.

A man in his 30’s was walking his dog in the 0-100 block of Coverdale Place NE when investigators believe a group of youths approached him and began to utter threats.

The man allegedly tried to walk away when a member of the group pulled out a machete and attacked him.

The man has several gash wounds on his face, head, shoulder, and back and his left ear was severed.

Police say people nearby heard the man scream and called 911. The group of youths had dispersed before police arrived.

The victim is expected to survive, but he requires extensive reconstructive surgery.

A 17-year-old was arrested Sunday and police have now charged him with aggravated assault, possession of a dangerous weapon, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of breaching current conditions.

His name cannot be released under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.
