Councillors meet after critical comments from mayor

A meeting chaired by the mayor Tuesday could be very awkward.

That is according to some colleagues after Naheed Nenshi made comments in Halifax late last week about council members playing favourites and needing to “check their egos at the door.”

Councillor Sean Chu tells City News Nenshi shouldn’t be airing his dirty laundry in public.

“I think it’s inappropriate to do so,” said Chu. “A good leader should have a cohesive quality not dividing people.”

Councillor Ward Sutherland said these kind of blanket comments shouldn’t happen.

“This is about personalities. We all have different opinions and we need to respect that. We all vote different ways. We all have different passions but publicly doing dirty laundry is not helpful to anybody,” Sutherland said.

Some councillors say they would appreciate an apology from the mayor and that these comments are painting them all with the same brush, similar to previous comments by Nenshi about councillors getting drunk.
