Balzac Billy doesn’t see a shadow, predicts an early spring for Alberta

It looks like an early spring, thanks to Alberta’s favourite “ground squirrel” Balzac Billy.

Crowds of people gathered in Balzac Monday to see if Billy would see his shadow.

Emerging from his hole, with a coffee in hand, Billy looked but saw nothing.

The Blue Grass Garden Centre, just south of Airdrie, was the centre for the Groundhog Day celebration.

Festivities included a pancake breakfast.

Some other groundhog prognosticators have already emerged: both Shubenacadie Sam in Nova Scotia, and Punxsatawney Phil in Pennsylvania have seen their shadows, meaning another six weeks of winter.

Ontario’s Wiarton Willie is predicting an early warm-up.
