Most Albertans have no issue with GSAs: poll

The majority of Albertans do not oppose Gay-Straight Alliances.

A Leger poll conducted this month, shows 20.7 per cent of those living in the province are against the organizations.

Dr. Kristopher Wells, from the Institute for Sexual Minorities Studies and Services at the University of Alberta, says the study shows the stereotype of an uber-conservative Alberta is not true, and that we are “moving into the 21st century.”

He says Premier Jim Prentice needs to take his finger off the pause button, and provide full support for LGBTQ students.

“People expect their elected leaders and MLAs to reflect their views and their values. If they majority of Albertans don’t seem to have a problem with GSAs, the question is: what’s taking our MLAs and our premier so long to do the right thing?” he said.

Dr. Wells says GSAs are about security and safety, and there is consistent evidence that they save lives.
