Council approves sale of land for Stadium Shopping Centre Redevelopment Plan

Despite concerns of area residents, city council has voted unanimously to sell a strip of land in the northwest along 16th Avenue as part of the Stadium Shopping Centre Redevelopment Plan.

The developer wants to build a multi-use pathway on the strip of land at the corner of 16th Ave and Uxbridge Drive.

The land had long been set aside for an interchange and one of the community’s biggest worries has been the possible increase in traffic congestion.

But according to the developer, the effect on traffic has been studied extensively.

Mayor Nenshi says the city has also examined the intersection, which is why they are confident there will not be an interchange.

Nenshi says the deal had been up in the air for quite some time and the community association had two specific concerns, one being the land needed for future transportation, particularly the BRT line that will be built along 16th Avenue and whether they’re getting fair value for the land.

He says administration has answered those issues to his satisfaction.

The city will be compensated by being allotted public open space in the mixed-use plan which is expected to include commercial and residential space along with a hotel.
