Edmonton wind storm causes flights to be diverted to YYC

It’s a bit of a shuffle at the Calgary International Airport which is feeling the effects of bad weather in Edmonton.

Heavy rain and winds clocked at 95 km/h have meant YEG has cancelled or delayed about 50 flights Friday.

Calgary’s airport is doing its best to accommodate about a dozen diverted flights.

Jodi Moseley with the Airport Authority says they are open to taking anything that can’t land in Edmonton.

“It’s really the airlines that are taking on a lot of the extra heavy lifting and working to accomodate those passengers that have been displaced at a different airport, but we provide any support that we can to help them out.”

Officials say bird-attracting earthworms surfacing on the tarmac from all the rain did not create a problem as they first thought.

Airlines are asking travellers to check their flights before heading to the airport as more delays and cancellations could pop up.

Air Canada is adding extra flights to its Saturday schedule from Edmonton to both Vancouver and Toronto to ease the back-log.
