Wildfire season in Alberta

Wildfires have led to a few closures in the province.

Highway 93 is shut down between Waterfowl Lakes campground and south of Rampark Creek.

In addition, a forest closure is in effect from the mountains south of Highway 11 and north to the Cline River, east from the Banff National Park border to White Rabbit Creek.

Officials are watching a fire on the B.C. border near Peace River along with a fire near Rocky Mountain House.

There are dangerously dry conditions in the northwest part of the province, the west and around Calgary.

Duncan MacDonnell with Environment and Sustainable Resource Development said just because there’s rain in recent memory, it doesn’t make it safe.

“The thing about the climate in Alberta, is that it only takes three, four or five days of hot dry weather and any kind of moisture that you’ve got out there that has damped your fire hazard rating down, it can vanish that quickly,” he said.

MacDonnell said if you are out on an ATV make sure your exhaust is clean and if you are camping put out your fire.
