Brian Burke says Calgary needs a new arena

Always candid and straight to the point, President of Hockey Operations for the Calgary Flames Brian Burke spoke to a sold-out crowd about the business of hockey Thursday morning.

In his address, he touched on the future of the league, his playoff hopes, and the need for Calgary to have a new arena.

“We have the finest, state-of-the-art, 1988 building in the league,” Burke said, adding the state of the Saddledome is no secret.

He shied away from any political questions, including who exactly should pay for it.

His call for a new facility seems to have the support of the Calgary Chamber of Commerce and its president, Adam Legge.

“It’s another meeting, convention facility that Calgary’s really in desperate need of,” Legge said.

Legge adds, not only do the Flames need it, but we’re missing out on a lot of big-name entertainment.
