Commercial pilots report being flashed by a laser at YYC

Calgary Police are asking for the public’s help as they try and track down those responsible for pointing a laser at airplane cockpits Tuesday night.

A green floodlight was also pointed, not only into the sky, but at drivers on the ground.

Sergeant Thor Ball tells 660News, around 10:30 p.m., the HAWCS helicopter was dispatched to the Signal Hill area in the southwest after two pilots reported laser hits.

The source of the light was not pinpointed.

About an hour later, a driver reported being blinded by a light in the 100 block of Sierra Vista Bay southwest.

Again the HAWCS helicopter was sent to the area, but nothing was found.

Thor says such pranks are not only dangerous but potentially deadly; a laser can also cause eye damage or blindness.

Last year in Canada, more than 440 pilots were flashed by a laser.

A number of charges can be filed against offenders, who can also be slapped with fines up to $100,000.

Anyone with information is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers.
