Extradition of man accused in Amanda Todd Case could take years

VANCOUVER – After a 35-year-old Dutchman was charged in connection with the Amanda Todd case, Canada is seeking extradition. But that is not a quick process according to News1130 Legal Analyst Michael Shapray.
He says it could takes years for the man to actually be brought to Canada to stand trial. “I think there are a lot of challenges ahead, including the fact he may be convicted in his home country and serve a sentence, and that sentence could be a long time.” The man, whose name police aren’t releasing, was arrested in the Netherlands in January.
According to Shapray, the Canadian criminal justice system needs to shift to be able to keep up with crimes involving modern technology, especially since child pornography cases spanning multiple countries are becoming more common. “I don’t know that we’re unprepared, but it’s so quickly shifting that we have to be able to shift our justice system and the administration of our criminal justice system to reflect modern changes.”
The man is charged with extortion, luring, criminal harassment, possession of child pornography and possession of child pornography for the intent of distribution related to incidents between January 1 2010, and October 10, 2012–the day Amanda Todd died. He is accused of similar offenses in several other countries including the Netherlands, with police believing there could be as many as 40 victims.
Just over a month before her death, Todd shared her story in a Youtube video, including how she was lured by a man to expose herself during an online chat. She claimed a year later the man threatened to share the photo with everyone she knew, then allegedly did so on Facebook.
