Drink of choice for Canadians: beer, wine close behind

Stats Canada is out with a new study that says wine is gaining popularity with Canadians.

Beer remained the drink of choice for Canadians but, maybe because of marketing and awareness, wine is increasing in sales.

While all provinces showed some growth, Alberta saw the largest increase at 11 per cent.

Owner of Cork Fine Wine, Chris Sikorsky, thinks this trend will continue.

He says, “Absolutely, I think it’s worth any trend where people are becoming more and more aware, regardless of whether it’s food or even products that they’re wearing, but people are a lot more conscience about what they’re actually consuming and putting into their bodies, so I think definitely there’s going to be a sub-set of the population to definitely accelerate this trend and keep it moving forward.”

Beer and liquor stores reported $21.4 billion worth of sales last fiscal year, which is up 2.2 per cent from the previous year.
