Westgate Spanish program to be moved to closer school : CBE

The Calgary Board of Education has altered plans to move a Spanish bilingual course from a crowded Calgary school.

Students enrolled in the Spanish and French Immersion programs at Westgate School in the southwest will now be housed closer to home at nearby Glenmeadows.

The changes take effect September 2015.

With many parents upset at the thought their kids may have had to bus to Eugene Coste, CBE Spokesperson Calvin Davies says feedback about the news has been positive.

There was a lot of backlash after an open house on the issue of overcrowding suggested the well-liked Spanish Bilingual program would be moved out of the area, but Davies says they always wanted to keep the students close to home.

When they found out about the availability at Glenmeadows, it was the perfect solution.

“What it’s going to allow for is future growth, in both the Spanish program and French immersion program,” Davies said.

Glenmeadows is currently home to the Calgary Arts Academy charter school, but they have plans to re-locate to a facility at the Stampede grounds.

The CBE is also making waves to deal with overcrowding at West Springs School.

Starting in fall of 2016, kindergarten enrolment will be capped at 100 students, and it will become a K-Grade 4 school.

Students in Grade’s 5 and 6 will be attending class at Rosscarrack School.
