Mayor says federal budget falls short on housing

Calgary’s mayor is disappointed with how housing fared in Tuesday’s federal budget.

Naheed Nenshi says there were no new announcements to help give affordable housing a boost.

He tells reporters there is $1.5 billion in expiring projects across the country, that Ottawa needs to address immediately.

“If we don’t get those programs renewed then we run the risk of a very, very large number of people no longer having access to affordable housing it’s not going to happen tomorrow, but it will happen over the course of the next year or two, so Minister Bergen and Minister Kenney it is time to have that conversation,” said Nenshi.

Nenshi is also frustrated with how slow the “Build Canada” fund is moving.

He says if politicians don’t at least release the criteria that will help municipalities get infrastructure funding many places will be losing a construction season in 2014.
