Rocker’s comments draw ire of oilsands proponents

Kicking off a four city concert tour, a Canadian music legend has launched a scathing attack on the federal government and the development of the oilsands.

Neil Young says Canada’s leaders are ignoring the environmental risks posed by oilsands development, adding it’s an embarrassment.

Proceeds from the concerts in Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina and Calgary will help an Alberta First Nation with its battle with oil companies and the Harper government.

In an email, a spokesperson with the Prime Minister’s office stated even a rock star’s lifestyle relies to some degree on the resources developed by thousands of hard working Canadians.

Jason MacDonald adds the government will continue to ensure environmental laws and regulations are rigorous.

According to the morning show host at Country 93.3 in Fort McMurray, the vast majority of people in town think Young is nothing more than a hypocrite.

Jerry Neville tells 660News, if Young was so worried about what’s happening in Fort Mac, he would stage a concert in their city, but he’s not.

The rock radio station in Fort McMurray, 97.9, continues to enforce a ban on the playing of any Neil Young music, a ban that was put in place last fall, after Young likened the town to Hiroshima.
