CTF brings back Alberta debt clock

It’s back.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has dusted off the Alberta debt clock, which was put away earlier in the decade.

The CTF hopes the device will not only anger taxpayers but shame the government into reining in its free-spending ways.

As of today, Alberta’s debt is pegged at $7.74 billion.

The CTF’s Provincial Director, Derek Fildebrandt told 660News, the debt clock is the best way people can keep tabs on the rising level of red ink.

“It shows people visibly how big the debt is and how fast it’s changing,” he said. “Our debt as a province is going up more than $11 million a day, we’ve got to stop the clock.”

Fildebrandt said it’s amazing how just five years ago Alberta had no debt and $15 billion in a sustainability fund, but now $15 billion is gone and the government has yet to put forward a solid plan to curb spending and pay back it’s loans.

The federation is working on putting the debt clock on a trailer and taking it on a tour across the province.
