Christine Sinclair wins 10th straight player of year award

The accolades continue to roll in for Christine Sinclair.

This week, Canada Soccer announced her as the female selection for the 2013 BMO Canadian Player of the Year.

At the international level this year, Sinclair participated in her 14th season with Canada, most recently making her 200th career appearance in a red and white kit. Additionaly, she was a finalist for the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award and was also honoured on Canada’s Walk of Fame.

She also had a big year with her professional club, the Portland Thorns of the NWSL.

“I have many ties to the Portland area, having gone to university there,” Sinclair says. “It’s just a soccer crazy city. To be able to reward the fans and that organization with a championship meant so much to me.”

Although Sinclair says she’s so grateful for the awards and recognition, she’s looking at the bigger picture.

“Very few people get to actually play in a World Cup at home,” Sinclair explains. “I think we have a shot at doing very well.”

Canada is hosting the 2015 Women’s World Cup and Sinclair believes the future is bright for soccer in our country.

“What were doing right now is building toward that,” the 30-year-old says. “We’re trying to prove to everyone that what happened in London isn’t a one off thing and that it’s sustainable.”

Sinclair is now an 11-time winner of the BMO Canadian Player of the Year award. The 2013 runners up were midfielder Diana Matheson, goalkeeper and Calgary product Erin McLeod and midfielder Desiree Scott.
