Firefighters respond to two fires within a hour

Fire officials are investigating two fires within a few blocks from each other in Braeside Sunday morning.

In the first, the blaze broke out on the exterior of a home on Brookpark Drive S.W. around 4:30 a.m.

Fortunately, the homeowner heard the fire outside his bedroom window and called for help.

Battalion Chief Ernie Molineaux tells 660News, it was very fortunate because the fire had already snuck into the attic.

He says it’s a really good example of why smoke detectors should be put up there, as well, which not many people think about.

Meantime, Molineaux says his crews were not even finished at that scene before another blaze broke out at a condo complex a few blocks away.

The complex, on Brookpark Boulevard, was partially evacuated.

“In this case also the fire seemed to have started on the exterior deck of the three story condominuim on the ground floor. The individual that was in the suite opened the door which actually allowed a lot of smoke into the building which triggered the alarm, but no actual fire entered the building,” says Molineaux.

Several units were evacuated but everyone was allowed back in a short time later.

Fire investigators are looking into the cause.

So far, Molineaux says, they have no evidence the two fires are linked or are suspicious.
