U of C gets funding for Lymphedema research

A major funding boost for the University of Calgary.
Researchers at the Faculty of Medicine will now be able to explore the lymphatic system thanks to a $5-million donation from Dianne and Irving Kipnes.
Dianne was diagnosed with lymphedema; a chronic infection often arising from the treatment of various cancers, following her own cancer treatment.
Associate Professor, Pierre-Yves von der Weid tells 660News it’s hard to get funding because no one has died from the disease.
“So, it’s different from stroke, from cancer; those drive an interest because you need to save the life of people,” he says. “This is not the case with lymphedema. However, people are suffering a great deal, and they need treatment that they cannot find.”
The donation will help develop a lymphatic imaging suite, more education, and support for new researchers.
