Temporary housing may not be needed in Calgary

It’s prepped and ready to go, but a temporary housing site in Calgary to help victims of June’s flooding might not be required.

Temporary housing has already been provided for residents in High River and the Siksika First Nation east of Calgary.

Several hundred people became homeless in June’s flooding and more than 14,000 and 500 homes were damaged in a number of communities.

Alberta’s Associate Minister of Regional Recovery and Reconstruction, Rick Fraser, said a site for temporary housing in Calgary has been prepared but no residences have been constructed yet.

Rick Fraser said a lot of people are moving out of the Saddlebrook temporary housing in High River.

He said as people leave Saddlebrook it allows the government to move in new people in need of assistance.

Fraser said if the trend continues, the government won’t have to swallow the expense of completing the site in Calgary.
