Protesters gather to raise awareness of GuZoo standards

Around 50 people gathered at the Calgary Courthouse Monday afternoon to protest what they call a lack of enforcement regarding Alberta zoo standards.

The Council of Concerned Albertans for Animal Rescue and Public Safety says GuZoo in Three Hills has not changed the way they run their business, despite several reports and photos that show a lack of upkeep and safety for the animals.

CCAAWPS member Sylvia Meier says, “We want the Alberta Government to do their job and oversee the zoo. It is a zoo, not a farm, so it is held by the zoo standards. The last report that was put out, (owner Lynn Gustafson) had missed all 108 and yet he’s open.”

Last fall, the government said an inspection of the zoo’s operations in July 2012 showed no problems with the health or condition of the animals.

A protest was planned at the Alberta Legislature as well.
