Man killed in head on crash on QE2

A cable barrier that separates the northbound and southbound lanes of the QE2 was not able to save a Calgary man’s life early Saturday morning.

The man was driving southbound near Carstairs around 1:30 a.m. when he drifted into the northbound lanes and crashed head on with a semi truck.

Didsbury RCMP Corporal Warren Wright says they’re investigating how it happened.

“Just speaking with the other members who were on the scene, they said that the car had somehow slipped through the cable barrier.  I’m not sure how that happened, whether it’s the design of the car,” says Wright.

The 35 year old man was airlifted by STARS to hospital where he died.

The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Police don’t believe speed, alcohol, or road conditions were factors in the crash, but they say driver fatigue may have been a cause.
