Province to announce new cancer care centre in Calgary

A major announcement about cancer care is expected be announced at the Foothills Medical Centre Friday.

After almost 10 years of waiting, wondering, and dealing with an overcrowded Tom Baker Cancer Centre, it looks like Calgary will finally be getting a new cancer centre.

According to reports, the idea is to replace the existing facility which many complain is strained beyond its years.

Premier Alison Redford will make the announcement, alongside the Alberta Cancer Foundation and Alberta Health Services.

In 2005, Premier Ralph Klein promised $1-billion for the creation or expansion of a new centre in Edmonton or Calgary.

Those plans had to be shelved after a lengthy debate.

The province is keeping tightlipped on details on the new centre.

There’s no word yet on how much the centre will cost, or if it will stay near the Foothills.

There have been rumours it could be moved to the newly opened South Health Campus.
