Calgary feeling the population boom

It’s not quite like the last boom, but Alberta is going through another population spike.

According to Statistics Canada, the province experienced a net increase in new arrivals of around 14,000 in the third quarter of 2012.

A Calgary alderman and the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts & Counties say the province is feeling it.

Gord Lowe tells The Calgary Herald, the increased numbers are evident in bumper-to-bumper traffic and growth, pressure in new suburbs.

Lowe adds that thanks to municipal initiatives Calgary better off, than it was during the last boom a few years ago.

President of the Alberta Association of Municipal Districts & Counties, Bob Barss adds the population growth is putting pressure on schools, hospitals and housing, as well as  infrastructure.

In Calgary, the apartment vacancy rate for October was only 1.3 per cent, down from 1.9 percent a year earlier.
