Plans for a spring driving ban along the Bow Valley Parkway have been put on hold for a year.
According to the Calgary Herald, Parks Canada says it doesn’t have the infrastructure in place to shutdown a 17 kilometre stretch of highway between Johnston Canyon and where the former Highway 1A meets the Trans-Canada, just west of Banff.
The idea behind the driving ban, between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. from March 1st to June 25th each year, is to protect wildlife after the hibernation season comes to an end. The area is populated by grizzlies, wolves and moose.
A Southern Alberta chapter spokesperson for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society is disappointed with the decision, and worries the one-year delay could prove to be permanent.
