Two eastbound lanes of Trans-Canada Highway reopen west of Banff

Two eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway 1 have reopened after a mudslide swept over the road Friday afternoon.

Police say the westbound lanes of the highway remain closed and probably will not be reopened until early Saturday morning.

Heavy equipment is now working to clear the highway of mud and debris.

It’s estimated the mud is a thick as a metre and a half in some areas of the slide.

Parks Canada spokesman Mark Merchant says it doesn’t appear that anyone has been injured in the slide and mounties have closed the Banff Park east gate until further notice.
