Fire fatalities double in Calgary

2009 saw the Calgary Fire Department add manpower and funding but the city still ended up with a steep increase in fire fatalities compared to 2008 and 2007.
Fire Chief Bruce Burrel tells the Calgary Sun, this is a disturbing trend.
Six fire fatalities occurred last January in Parkdale because of metal bars on windows that could not be removed.
23-year-old Colleen Mantei, 19 year-olds Tiffany Cox and Jonathan St. Pierre were helplessly trapped.
This tragedy prompted the fire department to join up with the University of Calgary to avert a similar tragedy.
Safety check lists have now been made available at the U of C targeting those most likely to rent illegal accommodations.
