Fire fatalities double in Calgary

2009 saw the Calgary Fire Department add manpower and funding but the city still ended up with a steep increase in fire fatalities compared to 2008 and 2007.

Fire Chief Bruce Burrel tells the Calgary Sun, this is a disturbing trend.

Six fire fatalities occurred last January in Parkdale because of metal bars on windows that could not be removed.

23-year-old Colleen Mantei, 19 year-olds Tiffany Cox and Jonathan St. Pierre were helplessly trapped.

This tragedy prompted the fire department to join up with the University of Calgary to avert a similar tragedy.

Safety check lists have now been made available at the U of C targeting those most likely to rent illegal accommodations.
