Large crack forces closure of Calgary pedestrian bridge

A four-to-six inch crack has forced the City of Calgary to close a popular pedestrian bridge.

The discovery was made during an inspection of the George C. King Bridge – more commonly known as St. Patrick’s Island Bridge.

The span connects Bridgeland to East Village.

The bridge was due for inspection when a project team discovered a large crack.

A temporary fix is expected to cost about $20,000. It’s unclear whether the City can recoup the costs from the builder.

“We will be following some course of action as it relates to how we can recover the dollars that are going to be spent during the repair,” said Susan Veres, Vice-President of Calgary Municipal Land Corporation.

The bridge was completed in 2014.

It’s expected the bridge will be closed until early September.

Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to use the Baines Bridge and 12th Street S.E. to access St. Patrick’s Island.
