Calgary gets break from heat, smoke

It’s business as usual in Calgary when it comes to the weather.

A cool down over the weekend means the city is back to seasonal temperatures and air quality has significantly improved.

A high of 21 is expected Monday, and Breakfast Television Meteorologist Andrew Schultz said it’s actually a pretty average temperature for this time of year.

“But, when you’ve been so spoiled and have had those temperatures in the high 20s, and scorchers into the mid-30s like we experienced — record-breaking heat — it will feel cooler than last week,” he said.

You won’t have to wait long for it to warm up, as mid-week temperatures hit the high 20s.

But, by the weekend, it will cool back down, with showers in the forecast.

There’s good news for those with breathing difficulties: the air quality index is sitting at 3, which means a low or moderate risk.

However, it all depends on what direction the wind blows.

“All bets are off as you move deeper into the week when it comes to the smoke situation, but a bit of a break from the smoke (Monday), and a bit of a break from the heat,” Schultz said.

Officials are also trying to prevent fires from sparking in our province by extending several fire bans in places surrounding Calgary.
