New Central Library will highlight Calgary history

Local history buffs may want to check out the new Central Library when it opens on November 1.

A one million dollar donation from history advocates Walt and Irene Deboni paved the way for an area in the library focusing on Calgary and southern Alberta’s past.

Christine Gingerick with the Calgary Public Library Foundation said this is another example of how the library is so much more than just a lender of books.

“We like to say it’s an igniter of human potential. People can come in and access ideas and experiences they haven’t thought of before. So, the new Central and all libraries are a place to gather and learn,” she said.

She said the look and feel of this section of the library will look different from the rest of the building.

“The stack ends, or the ends of the bookshelf will feature digital images from the local history collection,” Gingerick said.

Those images will include maps and photographs from Calgary’s historical archives.
