The recent heatwave in the city has Calgary police, EMS and the Calgary Humane Society out with a very familiar message.
Don’t leave kids, or pets in hot vehicles.
Brad Nichols with the Humane Society says leaving an animal in a car, even for a few minutes, is dangerous.
“A lot of people that we deal with feel like they are doing their animals a service by taking them out with them and not leaving them, whether it’s loneliness, separation anxiety, or just enrichment,” said Nichols, “I have seen enough cases where animals suffer as a result, even if it’s going to the dog park and then stopping at the store on the way back.”
If you ever see an animal in a hot car, Nichols is reminding everyone to call 911 right away.
Even though adults can tolerate the heat, Adam Loria with EMS says kids can’t.
“The heat inside a vehicle can quickly overwhelm them, placing them in an immediate life threatening situation,” said Loria.
If people are caught leaving their kids in a hot car, they could face a $10,000 fine, or 18 months in jail. If an animal is left, people could face up to a $20,000 fine and a lifetime ban on owning animals.
