Calgary roads are riddled with thousands of potholes

City of Calgary roads crews are working hard to get rid of those annoying bumps in your drive.

Tara Norton-Merrin Spokesperson for the City of Calgary Roads Department says there were between 15,000 and 20,000 ruts in the road following the harsh winter.

However, she believes they will be able to fill all remaining potholes by the end of the summer.

“We are facing still another 3,000 potholes we believe are on the road, crews are filling in about 700 a week right now,” adding weather will impact their ability to fill them all, “If we get a lot of rain then the crews can’t go out and fill potholes.”

She says they received 4,700 calls from the public about potholes between January 1 and July 15 compared to 2,800 during the same time period last year.

“The numbers, however, are in line with the pothole numbers that we saw after the 2013-14 winter, which we know was also very harsh, so that is a direct correlation,” she said.

She adds anyone who sees potholes on main roads, or in residential areas is encouraged to call 311 and report them.

“We do try to do most of the pothole work at night so that it doesn’t impact traffic,” she said.
