The Calgary Humane Society, and other animal rescue organizations hope people try to find a new home for their pets before turning to a shelter.
With the warmer weather an influx of animals is being seen.
Sage Pullen Mcintosh with the Humane Society tells 660 NEWS there is a waiting list to even give up a pet.
“We really want to work with community members to find out is surrendering the right option,” Pullen McIntosh said. “Often we will see people surrender an animal and the next day say, ‘well actually I have a family member that can take them, or my living situation has changed.'”
Pullen Mcintosh urges people to consider the Humane Society as a last resort.
Rescue organizations like Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society (AARCS) is also seeing an increase in animals, especially cats.
