Alberta communities better prepared for disasters and emergencies

Keeping Albertans safe is the focus of a new $6-million provincial government program aimed at boosting emergency preparedness among towns and cities.

Six communities, including Calgary, will receive grants to coordinate and train regional all-hazards incident management teams to strengthen emergency response.

Minister of Municipal Affairs Shaye Anderson said the funding includes $1.2-million for Calgary.

“The Canada Task Force 2 is an incredible resource that not only helps Calgary but is all across the province,” Anderson said.

Anderson said many of the lessons learned from flooding in 2013 were used to help improve emergency preparation.

“Over the past few years in Alberta we’ve had some significant disasters,” Anderson said. “One of the things we do after each disaster is a post-incident report and it helps us learn from those disasters.”

Funding will go towards training regional all-hazard incident management teams to response to disaster situations.
