Alberta’s Agriculture Minister not afraid of trade war

As the Calgary Stampede draws to a close, the province’s agriculture minister is trying not to let threats of an escalating trade war with the U.S. change his focus.

Oneil Carlier says the prospect of duties on agriculture products is a concern, but it won’t derail efforts to open new markets.

“Frankly it doesn’t matter what current disputes might be with our cousin to the south we’re always looking for new markets, always looking to diversify,” he said. “We’ve had some really, some really interesting folks visiting right here at the stampede including a delegation with the United Arab Emirates to see what more they can do for food.”

Carlier was joined by Federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, The Honourable Lawrence MacAulay as they reaffirmed Ottawa’s commitment of $406 million over five years for Alberta under the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

“As any industry including agriculture what we’re advancing now a lot is that high technology,” said Carlier, which could include things such as autonomous tractors.
