Calgary heats up for Stampede, first day expected to be a scorcher

It will sure feel like the Wild West, as the Calgary Stampede kicks off this year.

Temperatures are expected to soar past 30 degrees Friday, for the first day of the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.

It’s already warming up in time for Sneak-a-Peek as some featured artists play the Big Four Roadhouse and Coca-Cola Stage, and the midway gets turned into a block party Thursday evening.

Local paramedics are urging Calgarians and visitors to take care of themselves in the heat.

Adam Loria with Calgary EMS said it’s important to stay hydrated.

“Caffeinated beverages, alcoholic beverages — we just need to keep in mind that those do promote dehydration, something we obviously don’t want in this heat,” he said.

“Wear a hat, protect your head, protect your face and skin from the UV rays.”

Loria said they also run into a lot of people every year who forget to apply — and re-apply — sunscreen.

Two field hospitals will be set up along the parade route Friday, just in case.

“The Stampede Park — have their own medical team that we will work closely with over the 10 days,” he said.
