Changes coming to Calgary Stampede security

Your trip through the turnstiles at the Calgary Stampede will be a little different this year.

Tom Sampson with the Calgary Emergency Management Agency says the entrances will be equipped with brand new walk-through metal detectors and more concrete vehicle barriers that will look in line with the decor of the Stampede.

In addition, CEMA has done twice as many emergency exercises as usual ahead of the 10-day party.

“Some of the best things that could happen but also some of the worst things that could happen.” Sampson explains, “And by doing that we learn lessons on all our previous years and we take all those lessons collectively, put them all together, and we create a stronger response.”

There are also dozens more security cameras around the park.

As for what you can bring in, the public is being told: if you can’t bring it to the airport, don’t bring it to Stampede. Water and snacks, of course, are okay.
