50 years later, Calgarians celebrate the Calgary Tower

A big celebration Saturday to mark the 50th anniversary of the Calgary Tower.

They are hosting a block party from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and you can take a ride up to the observation deck for half price.

The Calgary tower opened on June 30, 1968, to much fanfare and excitement.

Councillor Druh Farrell says it was the place to be.

“It was the coolest place in town, there was a little shop downstairs called the Zodiac Zoo, and if you were cool you shopped in that shop,” adding she also has special memories in the theatre, “that’s where my husband and I had our first date.”

She says many years later, the Calgary Tower still has significance for Calgarians.

“Still it remains a focal point of what we are, what we were, and what we want to be, it’s a place where we mark our moments, our moments in time.”
