The City of Calgary wants everyone to stay off the Bow and Elbow Rivers.

The Calgary Fire Department issued a boating advisory for the Bow on Saturday afternoon, closing all river access points because of high flow rates that are making river conditions dangerous.

The flow rate is over 270 cubic metres per second due to heavy rain.

“With all the rain we’ve had it’s definitely going to take a few days for this to move through the city, so I would anticipate we’re probably looking at least two to three days once the rain stops for this flow rate to go down and we will put out another notification as soon as we’re able to get everybody back on the river,” said Battalion Chief Harley Spate.

Later on Saturday afternoon, the advisory was extended to the Elbow River as well, as flow rates are exceeding 50 cubic metres per second after the rainfall.

The aquatics team is monitoring the situation and responding to the river while the advisory is in place.

It also says it’s important for people near the river to be aware of the high flow levels, and be cautious because fast moving water can cause river banks to collapse.
