Calgarians a step ahead of nationwide call for blood donations

Calgarians are getting a big thank-you from Canadian Blood Services for rolling up their sleeves.

As an urgent call is put out across the country to donate before July 2, appointment books are already filled here in our city.

“We would just like to thank people for their support, and we’d like to encourage people to continue making blood donation top of mind throughout the summer, and book and honour their appointments,” Spokesperson Deb Steele-Kretschmer said.

She said the need for blood is constant.

“For instance, platelets, one of the blood products we provide, has a shelf life of only seven days, so it needs to be replenished regularly,” Steele-Kretschmer said.

She said, if you’re travelling to other parts of the country, you could even roll up your sleeves there.

“I would encourage anyone who is travelling — throughout the summer and interested in booking an appointment across Canada, you can visit blood.ca, or download the Give Blood app, and find an appointment at a clinic near you,” Steele-Kretschmer said.

At least 23,000 donors are needed in other parts of the country before Canada Day is through.
